In line with UN System Wide Initiatives UNGA 58/220 of 23 December 2003 and the UNDP South-South Cooperation Framework (2005-2007), UNIDO embarked on establishing UCSSIC in the emerging economies of the South, with a view to fostering South-South cooperation in the sphere of industrial development.

    UNIDO, in its efforts to promote South-South cooperation as reflected in the deliberations of the thirty-first session of the Industrial Development Board (6-7 June 2006), the fortieth meeting of the Chairmen/Coordinators of the Group of 77 (8-9 June 2006), and following discussions with counterparts and stakeholders, has agreed to establish UNIDO Centers for South-South cooperation in selected countries.

    In September 2006, the Director-General led a UNIDO team to China to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Commerce, Government of China, for establishing a UNIDO Centre for South-South Industrial Cooperation in Beijing, China.

    UCSSIC China is officially launched on July 23, 2008 in Beijing.
